Backe, Robert
rebacke@yahoo.com
Bob Backe shares his life with wife Judith and their two daughters. Ooops! Can't forget the cocker spaniel in the house and countless kitties in the barn! Yes, Crown Point still has some rural properties, "progress" notwithstanding. Not surprisingly, Bob lists gardening and farming among his hobbies, plus following the Chicago White Sox baseball team (his favorite movie is the Kevin Costner baseball classic, "Field of Dreams").
Bob followed a solid Hoosier education at Purdue University (BS and MS in Biology Education) with 34 years of teaching (as of 2003). His lively classes can be found unfolding at Grimmer Middle School in Schererville, IN.
Our favorite teacher at Grimmer must have been doing something right during his teenage years. Bob never missed a day of school at Bishop Noll over a four-year period! That says a lot about those homegrown veggies!
During his Noll years, Bob enjoyed the Bi-Phy-Chem Club, and his long and successful career in science education attests to the fact that we can turn interests into lifelong pursuits. Voted "Teacher of the Year" further reflects well on Bob's determination to be the best, plus the high level of education that Bob received as a "Warrior!" |

Benson Butcher, Barbara
barbbutcher@comcast.net
Barb could be everyone's favorite sister - - great listener, happy disposition and loyal friend. Barb and her husband of 36 years, Bob Butcher, live in Crown Point, IN. They have one grown son, and their only daughter passed away 13 years ago at age 17. Barb keeps busy as an estimator/kitchen-bath coordinator and designer for Action Plumbing, Inc. She belongs to Tri Kappa and has served as V.P./President of her Chapter. Barb is also a Trade Winds Volunteer and is currently a Eucharistic Minister for the Ministry of Care. It's no wonder Barb lists her favorite movie as "An Affair to Remember," - - between the years 1967 and 1971, she worked in Convention Sales at the Palmer House in Chicago and for the General Manager of Playboy. Some of Barb's memorable experiences recall that she rehearsed with Jimmy Durante and rubbed his famous nose; had breakfast with Jack Jones & Jill St. John; Trini Lopez sang Happy Birthday to her on her 21st birthday; during the Democratic National Convention, she was in a meeting with Peter Lawford and Ethel Kennedy; going down the stairs at Playboy, Barb ran into Rosie Greer's stomach head first and he asked "if she was all right;" was in an elevator with Mohammed Ali after he lost to George Foreman and man did he look bad; met Hugh Hefner, Arnie Morton and Barbie Benton (and the two thought it was funny that only one letter separated their two names); and, had a small part on a committee with Sen. Richard Lugar. Though all of this mention of celebrities, Barb would be quick to say that nothing tops being a first-time grandma! Son John and Ginger of Evergreen, CO, announced the birth of their firstborn, Noah Michael Butcher, 7#-15oz., 20-1/2" long, born June 10, 2005! Upon hearing the news, the proud and excited grandparents immediately flew to Colorado to hug their offspring and declare Noah "a beautiful baby!" |

Bobalik,, John
jbobali@calumet.purdue.edu
John and his wife Judith reside in Chicago Heights, IL. Now is seems that John has the same passion for running as Forrest Gump! He received two varsity letters for tearing up the track at BNI. Next, he attended Lewis University and Purdue University, receiving a B.S. in Sociology/Physical Education, and an M.S. in Exercise Physiology. Would it be hard to believe that John's favorite teachers were also coaches - - Bob Bradtke and his track coach Rich Furjanic! John is now well known as the Exercise Physiologist for Purdue University Calumet and he has had numerous articles publicized in our local newspapers and periodicals on the importance of health and exercise. Guess what John put down as his hobbies/interests - - running and ballroom dancing! No wonder you keep in such good shape, John, you don't ever sit down! Could you bottle up your secret to all that energy, John, and sell it to us Jivers at the 40th reunion! |

Burney Tirapelli,, Cynthia
Cindy may single-handedly change the geriatric image of St. Petersburg, FL, her latest home. She’s as energetic as ever, as anyone who attended our last reunion will attest. Her two daughters have probably heard a lot of stories about Noll and old friends Bunny Fijut, Tarry Gargas, and Susie Surofka. Cindy is very involved with tennis these days as a member of the USTA. After traveling around the world, in part while working for Braniff International, she still thinks "the best is still to come." We presume that she’s referring to our upcoming reunion. |

Having also lived in Illinois and South Carolina, Linda and husband Patrick Smith call Memphis, TN, home, along with their 3 bichon frises - Buddy, Theo and Toby. Linda attended Indiana State University, and also Southeast Community Business College in Memphis. She is a Pre-Kindergarten Teacher at the Christ United Methodist Child Development Center.
Unfortunately the Smiths lost their only child, Thomas at the age of 26. Linda writes, "I truly treasure the fact I attended a Christian Brothers H.S., especially now more than ever. Reason - our beloved son, Tommy, who passed away 3/2000 also graduated from a wonderful Christian Brothers H.S. here in Memphis. The legacy of his memory will live on there and I can share this in a very special way. What wonderful people and memories we have forever." Linda goes on to say, "We had a wonderful family life, unfortunately, we won't have an extended family since Tommy was our only child. But life, faith, friends and growth will carry us through the rest of our days!" Linda advises that we should truly never take for granted bad things won't happen to you, they do! She believes, every day, please consider empathy for your fellow man. And, further, she states, "If you have "wealth" as in children and grandchildren - enjoy! If you have financial wealth, please give to others that need. How simple - the money will not die with you."
In short, Linda's philosophy on life, "Live every day to the fullest; don't take life or time for granted; and, have no regrets."
In her spare time, Linda enjoys decorating, painting "crafts," reading, writing poetry, traveling, and volunteer work with children. Linda laughs that her favorite high school memories are the "social activities," musicals, and the special friendships. Her Noll experience gave her an appreciation of a "good education," and a lifetime of experiences and friendships. Linda has the ability to conquer obstacles, but, just as in high school, she emphasizes, "I still love to have fun too!"
Finally, Linda quips, thank you all for all the fun, friendships and memories - '65 is truly still ALIVE! |

Edinger,, Donald (Rocky)
afilmaker@earthlink.net
After years of searching, we resorted to placing Don Edinger on our “Missing Classmates” Section. Then recently in November, 2008, Rocky “googled” Bishop Noll, and, he FOUND US! Growing up in Munster, IN, Don has traveled the world since then, living all over the U.S. and ten years in Israel. Currently living in Torrance, CA, Don tells us that he has been a psychologist, stockbroker, actor/singer/filmmaker and writer and is presently a Technical Writer for a Defense technology company. In his spare time, he is tinkering with a new film project, he enjoyed having a political blog and continues his musical interests. Always enjoying a challenge, Rocky is also a member of Mensa.
Whether it was football, wrestling, track, honors classes, saxophone practice, or his outside rock band, “smiling” Don was always a guy of many pursuits and nothing has changed in that regard. If you’d like to shout a “hey” to Don,” he may be reached at afilmaker@earthlink.net. |

Engle Bielefeld,, Elaine
ebeely@hotmail.com, ebielefeld1@att.net
One might expect that someone who has brought 5 sons and 3 daughters into the world would be happy to rest on her laurels once those children reached adulthood. Not Elaine. She lives in Lowell, IN, where she has been an elementary assistant at Oak Hill School for 23 years. She has also written for the Lake County Star, worked in customer service for Lowell Cleaners, on staff with the parks department, and with a latch-key kids program. Her voice has been heard with the St. Edward’s choir, as a Youth Minister, CCD teacher and, with great enthusiasm, at Lowell High School, Little League, and Softball events. She has served on regional panels and advisory boards as a parent and also as a founding member of Southlake Families In Action. Despite her busy schedule, Elaine has maintained contact with many of her BNI friends and was one of the driving forces behind our class reconnections since 2003 after previously serving on the 10th reunion committee. We’d like to see her relax and enjoy her nine grandchildren, but they might not be able to keep pace with this energetic Jiver who is a January 2009 graduate of St. Mary of the Woods College through their WED program! Her degree is in Humanities, concentration in history, with a minor in Professional Communications. She now would like to work in public policy or in some type of advocacy program for a non-profit agency. The message of service was instilled in her in the 60's at Noll and was reemphasized by the Woods. She strongly believes that we have a responsibility to improve ourselves and thereby improve the world.
She reminds us "It's never too late to begin your dream!"

Kathy is the widow of Tom Seremet, another '65 classmate who died suddenly and unexpectedly in 2004. The picture posted here, taken at their oldest son's wedding, is one of the last taken of Tom and Kathy before his passing. Kathy received her bachelor degree in Music Education at Dominican University (Rosary College) and is a teacher with the Farmington Public School System, where she proudly earned the "Teacher of the Year" award in 2002. She is also directing the vocal end of musical theatre in Farmington. As she turns 60, Kathy said she hopes to retire in 3 or 4 years. In her spare time, Kathy enjoys reading, golfing and traveling. She has been to Italy, Germany, Austria and the Netherlands, and has lived in Indiana, Illinois, Virginia, Kansas, Wisconsin and Michigan. Enjoying life in sunny Groveland, FL, after 52 years in Indiana, Gloria and husband Thomas have raised 1 daughter. Gloria was a member of the BNI Business Club and put that interest to work after Noll as head cashier for many years for Sterks Super Foods and Walgreens. The Smolens are now looking forward to traveling around Florida and the U.S., cooking, and enjoying their two dogs. Though saying that her least favorite experience in high school was the segregated classes, Gloria recalls fondly the football and basketball games and making kleenex flowers for Homecoming parade. Gloria says her Noll experience instilled a "determination to do the best I can and a strong religious faith." Gloria goes on to say, "I was always greatful for the school friendships, teachers and good moral backgrounds, a strong religious faith, a 1964 Noll graduate Tom who has been my soulmate for the last 35 years and I love deeply, and for the joy of seeing my daughter choose Noll for her high school education, for continued friendships, the thrill of seing my child get married last October right after four hurricanes, and was blessed with family and friends who came down to Florida to give loving support and many good memories." Does everyone realize that we have our very own Stand-up Comedian in our midst. Rey served in the U.S. Navy after his Noll years. He attended Vincennes University, Indiana Uiversity and University of Illiois-Chicago. Now, being a retired Steelworker from LTV Steel, Rey, whose stage name is Rey Barrera, has more time for his true love of comedy. Rey says that due to 17 years of stand-up comedy, he's rubbed elbows with many comedians, the likes of Sinbad, Drew Carey, Jerry Seinfeld, Rosie, George Lopez, and Andrew Dice Clay. Though Rey has a 3-week Gig of his own in California in July, he may be able to pull a few strings and be back in The Region to entertain us for our 40th Reunion.
Rey has 1 son, 1 daughter, and 2 granddaughters. When he's not on the road and making people laugh, Rey enjoys writing and running, and, though he has also lived in Texas, he still calls East Chicago home. Rey's favorite Noll memories include meeting his H.S. sweetheart, meeting all the new people at BNI, and lettering on the Swim team. His least favorite high school experience is only being at BNI for his last two years of high school.
Rey says Bless You All and hope to see you soon. Which, in short, follows his philosophy on life, "Live day to day and appreciate all." |

He served in the U.S. Army Aviation Division, and received his B.S. in Aeronautics from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. John is a pilot and also handles the airline management for his cargo flight company, Geo Air. As such, John has seen most of North America, Europe, and Central and South America. He has lived in Florida, Texas, Minnesota, Illinois and Kentucky. As a pilot, John has had the opportunity to meet various celebrities, even had dinner with John Wayne, and has flown Pete Conrad, Bob Hope, Tom Jones, John Goodman, Audrey Hepburn, Barry Goldwater, George Bush, Sr., and Senators Bob Graham and Ted Kennedy, among others. For pleasure, John enjoys golf, fishing, and thoroughbred horses. He is past president of the Kiwanis - Boca Raton Chapter.
John credits his Noll experience with a good education in spite of "my less than stellar effort," as he recalls that his least favorite experience was that "many teachers disliked me and I went to the office a lot!" John recalls fondly the Senior V talent show, Bye Bye Birdie, the cafeteria strike, and being part of the Lettermen's Club, earning varsity letters for track and football.
John says classmates may be surprised that, "I'm pretty conservative. Roll the dice when opportunity knocks at the door. No big surprises, what you see is what you get!" John concludes, "My life's been grand. I'll have plenty of time to rest when it's over!" |

Marv and his wife Nancy have 3 sons and Crissy, the dog, and reside in Lemont, IL. Marv received his B.S. from Illinois State University, and his M.S. from Northern Illinois University. He is a retired (2006) teacher from Lemont High School, where Marv also received the "Pride in Excellence" award for "long and meritorious service." He was also inducted into the Illinois High School Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame in 2004, after coaching football for 29 years and basketball for 3. As Marv says, "It's a long story, ask me when you see me!"
We're not surprised that Marv's favorite pastime is still sports and he enjoys collecting sports memorabilia, especially baseball cards. He is also a White Sox fan.
Favorite memories of Noll years for Marv center around football, basketball, being a senior class and student council officer and a member of the National Honor Society. He recalls, "So many wonderful friends. I hope they are all doing well!" Maybe it is because Marv has "great memories of good times and wonderful classmates," that Marv is looking forward to seeing lots of old familiar faces at our 40th anniversary class reunion in July, 2005! |

Gordon Dorn,, Annette
aardorn@yahoo.com
Working diligently on the Class of 1965 Reunion Committee, Annette has enjoyed the Reunion Train ride. Yep, it may have been many, many years ago that she sang that Girl Scout song, but, she believes it still rings ever true, "Make new friends, but keep the old; one is silver and the other gold." Reunions, Annette muses, give us all an opportunity to get back to our roots, to realize how far we've all come, and to enjoy renewed friendships as we continue to move forward into the future.
Currently retired and living in Schererville, IN, Annette and husband Rick, have raised 1 son and 1 daughter, and for now their grandchildren substitutes are 2 special Golden Retrievers, Sandy and Lexie.
Being chosen as Secretary for the BNI Business Club must have been a prelude to Annette's future career. She worked as a Secretary/Administrative Assistant at Northern Indiana Public Service Company (NIPSCO) for 37 years.
Her favorite Noll memories include attending basketball/football games as a member of the Booster Club, enjoying the personalities and decorum presented by the variety of Noll teachers, as well as meeting lots of classmates from the communities beyond our neighborhoods.
Something that would surprise my classmates was that we WON a bright, shiny new turquoise "1958 EDSEL" in a contest sponsored by the Hammond downtown merchants and the Hammond Chamber of Commerce! Even though sales fizzled for Ford, it was the greatest thing that happened for the Gordons - - up to that point we were a family with 7 kids and no car!
Annette's philosophy on life is aptly stated: "Enjoy the moment and appreciate all it took to get there". |

Gordon,, Roger
gordon2003@verizon.net
After graduating from Indiana University with an AB in Zoology in 1968 and an M.D. in 1972, Dr. Gordon was a family practitioner in The Region for many years. Listing biology, physics and lunch as his favorite subjects in high school should have been a hint as to what profession Roger would follow. Roger won the "perfect attendance" award at BNI and we're sure his fine doctoring has allowed many others to earn that coveted award too. Roger and his wife Ellen have one son and one daughter. Having retired from active practice, the Gordons now reside in Florida. |

Rita attended Mequon Academy in Wisconsin, the aspirancy for the School Sisters of Notre Dame, as a freshman and sophomore. She arrived at Bishop Noll for her junior and senior years. As Rita says, "Noll was a shock to me - the sheer number of students. There were only about 75 girls in the whole school in Wisconsin." Finding her niche at Noll, Rita became a page editor/staff writer for the JourNoll newspaper, and the editor of Tempo, the picture magazine.
After high school, Rita attended St. Margaret's, St. Bernard's School of Nursing, St. Joseph College, and Purdue University Calumet, coming away with an RN degree. Rita served as Senior Class President while attending St. Bernard's School of Nursing. She worked as a surgical nurse at St. Bernard Hospital in Chicago and is currently a "semi" volunteer sacristan at St. Joseph Church in Hammond. Rita and her husband William own and run Woodmar Laundromat and Drycleaning.
The Haas' have 2 sons, 2 daughters, 1 grandson and 1 granddaughter. Having traveled to Luxemboourg, England, Scotland, Wales, Switzerland, Italy, Canada, Mexico, and Yogoslavia, they currently reside in Hammond, IN. Rita stays busy caring for her grandson after school hours and for their youngest son who has down's syndrome, as well as reading and playing the piano.

Holinga,, George
gholinga@legacyfloor.com
George and his wife Karen reside in Orient, OH. After raising 1 son and 2 daughters, and retiring as Business Executive, Division President, for Dupont, it wasn't like George to rest on his laurels and play with his yellow lab, Droopy. He and another Columbus business partner are beginning a new venture as proud owners of Legacy Commercial Flooring. The company installs floors and offers maintenance services and employes about 260 employees spread out over three locations in Columbus, Cincinnati and Cleveland.
In high school, George was a member of the Drama Club, Debate Team, Chorale Club and French Club. And as president of the CYO, he earned the "Leadership Award" in his Diocese in 1965.
Having attended Purdue University, as well as Columbia University and Lehigh University, George received a BS degree in Business. He completed executive programs at Warton.
Although fishing is one of his hobbies, it is evident that classic cars have George's interest too. Not only is George a member of the Packard Motor Car Club, and Classic Car Association, he is the proud owner of Al Capone's last car! George says that he met with Capone's bodyguard/driver of 20+ years over a period of 5 years and after his release from Joliet Prison, ended up buying the car that had been stored in the driver's basement for over 30 years.
George has lived in Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey and Ohio, and has traveled to Europe, Mexico, Canada and the Czech Republic.
Of his experiences at BNI, George says that he enjoyed the Friday night football games and sock hops, Senior Year outings, and Senior Week pranks. He credits Bishop Noll for providing him with a good study ethic and a great basic education to prepare him for college and beyond.
In closing, George's philosophy, "The USA is the greatest country ever. The free enterprise system works. Communism, socialism didn't and doesn't work, why try it here. Work hard and smart, be honest and trustworthy, and nothing is unachievable." |

Joyce (Hruskocy) Clouse graduated from Marian College in Indianapolis, then worked briefly at the Whiting Public Library before returning to Indy where she was employed as a librarian in the Indianapolis-Marion County library system. In 2005 she achieved one of her life goals - - retirement - - even though that was not one of those goals that could be specified during annual evaluations and in action plans, etc.
Retirement is fun and filled with gardening, reading, collecting, and the freedom to be gone any weekend or longer. The collecting could use some restraint; cooking and cleaning should be encouraged instead.
Joyce and Mike live in Speedway, and their daughter lives in Seattle while doing an internship in stage management at Seattle Rep.
Joyce’s favorite teacher at Noll was Mrs. Kelly, who made Latin almost endurable for many of us. |

Tory and his wife Sally have two sons and reside in Lansing, IL. Attending Indiana State University and Indiana University, Tory has a B.S. degree in Marketing. He has recently retired from his position as Sales Instructor for Allstate Insurance Company. This gives Tory plenty of time for his favorite pastime - - golf! Tory credits his BNI years for giving him a solid education and a number of life-long friendships. He also says that the best "awards or honors" he has earned since high school are the titles of husband, father, and "best man" at the wedding of good friends! Tory remembers the "good life" we all had in high school, socializing with friends at dances, parties, drive-in theaters, homes, spending time cruising the area looking for something to do, attending football and basketball games at Noll and other schools, sectionals, countless hours at House of Pizza and other teen hangouts. Yes, Tory aptly reminded us all of the "good life" we had as teenagers of the 60's! |

We now know that those power naps in Chemistry class (and elsewhere) really worked for Dave Hutchens. Building on his early management training under Coach Dermody, Dave earned a degree at St. Joe's in Rensselaer and in 1990 he and his wife Darlene formed Pinnacle Consulting, Inc., a professional services consulting firm. Having recently been acquired by a publicly traded firm, the Hutchens acquired a small coffee shop in a local suburb of Chicago, and Dave is now authoring his very own monthly financial newsletter, known as Hutch's Investment Newsletter. Check it out at www.hutchinvestor.com. Dave and his wife Darlene live in Oak Brook, IL. They have 3 sons. Dave has done some traveling and rubbed shoulders with various celebrities, but still believes that friendship is the finest treasure. Ivan was in the active Marines for 10 years and in the reserves for another 18. He retired as a Colonel." The Zimmers currently live in Griffith, IN. Sally, AKA Sarah, has earned a degree in psychology from Calumet College of St. Joseph, and has worked as Human Resources Manager for Great Lakes Processing. She is also one of the very few professional women sports videographers for high school athletic events in Indiana. Sally mentions getting a better education than she realized at the time, and, the opportunity to meet her husband, as the best things she gained from her BNI experience. Sally's philosophy of life, "Always put life's setbacks into the greater scheme of things. They then truly become a bump on the roadmap of life. Living and teaching the Golden Rule should be brought back out of whatever storage in which it's been hidden, dusted off, and used by humanity."

Responding to the question of his least favorite subjects during high school, Phil tells us that all subjects in H.S. are great. Is that any indication that Phil IS currently a high school teacher! He works for the Diocese of Gary. For hobbies/interests, Phil says, "Watching the Cubs - I suppose it is more of an addiction!" Receiving his B.A. at St. Joe's and his M.A. at Valparaiso University, Phil belongs to the National Catholic Education Association and the Whiting Lions Club. His BNI experience gave him "an idea of who I was and what I wanted to be." Phil was a member of the National Honor Society, and the baseball and basketball teams. His philosophy of life, "God is love and he who abides in love, abides in God, and God in him." Although Phil is not able to be with us for our 40th reunion in July, he composed a poem, "65 at 40," for our class for the significant event, which he said perhaps will give someone a smile. Kolodziej,, Raymond
raymok@aol.com
A resident of Orland Park, IL, Ray and wife Diane raised a son and a daughter. With bookkeeping listed as a favorite subject, it's not surprising that Ray arrived at his profession as the Senior Vice President - Chief Financial Officer for Wilbert, Inc. in Broadview, IL.
Having served time in the United States Army Reserve, Ray went on to get a B.S. in Accounting from Indiana University, CPA from the University of Illinois, and MBA from the University of Chicago.
When not crunching numbers, Ray can be found boating, reading, or observing spectator sports, perhaps with fond memories of playing football at BNI. He has also traveled to Mexico, England, France and the Netherlands.
Ray's favorite Noll memories include participating in the milk boycott, playing on the football team, and the great fun they had in Senior 4 homeroom under the tutelage of Bob Bradtke. Meeting all of the great classmates and the solid education foundation, focus and discipline that was provided to me in the education process, says Ray, are the best things about my Bishop Noll experience.
Ray passes on this thought to his classmates, "Our generation has been the leading edge trendsetters in America for the last 50 years. We set the trends in education, music (i.e. rock and roll), protests, challenging the establishment, and consumer tastes. Let's continue the trend and not go quietly into the night as we become older." |

Kolodziej,, Thomas

After his Noll days, Tom served in the U.S. Air Force and Air Intelligence, including a tour in Vietnam. He attended Purdue University Calumet and received an Associates in Applied Sciences in Computer Technology. Tom has worked as a Computer Programmer/Analyst, and is currently working as an Insurance Agent with Allstate Insurance. Tom also showed an early interest in the Arts, belonging to the BNI Choral Club and Drama Club, as well as participating in class plays in his sophomore through senior years, and he even served as Mardi Gras chairman one year. Therefore, we would not be surprised that you may also find Tom at Lakeridge Performing Arts in Munster, IN, where he serves as an Usher for their live performances. Through this medium, Tom has had the opportunity to enjoy many fine musicals and meet many performers.
Tom says that looking back at the best thing his Noll experience gave him was his wife, Nancy Bryzgalski, also of the Class of 1965 - - although, Tom confesses, they didn't know each other then, but, seven years later they were married. The Kolodziejs have 1 son and 1 daughter, and a black Cocker Spaniel. Though they have lived in California, Nebraska and Illinois, Tom and Nancy currently reside in Munster, IN.
When he isn't computer surfing, Tom enjoys getting out on the golf course or hitting a few strikes at the bowling alley. Tom shares this thought with us, "May life smile upon each of you and your families too and peace be in your hearts." |

Attending Indiana State University, Bob earned both his B.S. and M.S. degrees. He has split his teaching and coaching careers between Lake Central and Andrean High Schools. He and his wife Patti have a son and a daughter. They live in Dyer, IN. Bob participated in all sports at Noll - - football, wrestling, track and baseball. It was no wonder with his athletic interests that he would make his career one of coaching and teaching. To Bob, it's a family affair - - he is still into weight training and fitness, wife Patti is well known for Patti's All-American Gymnastists throughout our area, daughter Kelly holds the title of Miss Indiana Basketball, and son Joe is an entertainer, stage actor and professional dancer in N.Y. City. Latest word we just received from Bob, after 36 years of teaching, he has taken early retirement from Lake Central H.S. He coached a stint with Valparaiso University football beginning with Spring practice in 2005. Currently Bob has been coaching at Crown Point H.S., where the Bulldogs boast a 23-2 record during these past two seasons.
In closing, Bob says to those thinking of retirement, "I hope you can this year and join the fun." |

Not surprising, Chick says his hobbies still and always are hot rods and Harleys. Hey, maybe you're just letting off steam after all those dreaded and hated Latin classes as you listed your least favorite subject at Noll to be Latin AND Latin, and your favorite subjects could include anything BUT Latin. Hopefully being on the swim team helped you to drown some of that misery!
Remember, now, Chick, if you can't arrive in Hammond this July by roadster or Harley, just hop on our Reunion Train as we can't wait to see you again! |

Bob received his B.S. in Pharmacy from Purdue University, his M.D. from the Indiana University School of Medicine, and his Board Certification in Family Practice performing his Family Medicine Residency at UCLA. After 27 years of making people feel better at the Jasper County Hospital and the Clinic of Family Medicine in Rensselaer, Dr. Kaye has recently chosen the title of "retiree." Where once Bob would drive his trusty SUV through any kind of weather answering an emergency or newborn delivery, now you may see him cruising the Rensselaer backroads in his shiny new T-bird! For several years Bob has been taking special joy in his role officiating area high school football games, trading in his scrubs and stethoscope for the black and white shirt and whistle! Also, anyone that knows Bob, is aware of his real passion - - anything to do with Purdue University sports! Yep, Bob may be a doctor, but he bleeds "black and gold!" Thinking back to his BNI days, Bob is especially proud of the "perfect attendance" award that he received. And, we can all take heart in his philosophy of life, "Whether or not you enjoy it, take it a day at a time because tomorrow is a new day!" Bob's final survey comment is genuine, "God Bless the BNI Class of '65!" |

Lorraine assures us that, "Seeing the runway disappear under you is awesome!" Favorite high school memories for Lorraine include decorating for dances, basektball games, sock hops, driving her brother's car to and from school while he slept days because he worked nights, and, having fun with friends. The best thing this lady learned from BNI - - self-discipline, confidence and tenacity. Lorraine says that, "I love to dance and tell a funny true story. Lanigan,, John

John worked as Deputy Director, Research Forum on Children, Families and the New Federalism at the National Center for Children in Poverty, at Columbia University, NY, NY. He was also the Executive Director of the Institute for the Advancement of Social Work Research, in Washington, DC. These and other positions marked an illustrious career as a Domestic Social Policy Analyst, (which included research and evaluations relating to human capital development and welfare reform). John did grant and contract work with the National Institutes of mental health, drug abuse, disease control, alcohol abuse, child abuse & neglect, and family violence. In 2004, John made a career move - - he retired to sunny St. Petersburg, FL! He had a good chance to check out other likely retirement locations in his many travels here and abroad. The former swimmer and diver must be answering the call of the ocean. After all, John did win the title of 1965 Sectional Diving Champion! Dr. John holds degrees from I.U. Northwest (B.A.-Psychology), University of Chicago (M.A.-School of Social Service Administration), and The Heller Graduate School on Social Policy and Management - Brandeis Univ., Waltham, MA (Ph.D.). John also served in the U.S. Air Force. He has 1 grown son. John's favorite Noll memories include sockhops, carpooling to BNI in his 1952 blue Dodge, and attending sports events. John says the best experience he gained from BNI was learning to appreciate racial and ethnic diversity across the BNI student population and receiving a quality education on which to build. He further states that "though he didn't end up going to the Olympics for diving," he did develop a love for learning. In short, John's life philosophy, "Be here now! Good things are happening to me now! Nothing to attack, nothing to condemn, nothing to defend, and no interest to guard, I am at peace." |

Lapinskas Curry,, Rima
curryus2@verizon.net
Rima followed up her artistic endeavors with the play productions at Noll by earning a B.A. in Art Education. She attended St. Mary of the Woods, Inter-American University, and the University of North Carolina. Rima has been an art teacher for a Junior High School, an interior designer and a business owner. She enjoys reading, writing, painting, bicycling, hiking/walking, camping, and travel. Currently living in Sunland, CA with husband Steve, Rima has traveled the Caribbean and South America, and has also lived in Puerto Rico, Maryland, North/South Carolina, and Florida. Rima is a writing contributor to the class website and is a member of the 2005 Reunion Committee. One of the best things her Noll experience gave her, says Rima, includes the first steps towards an awareness of the broad scope of life and "livingness." In short, her life philosophy, "One person can make a difference. One can influence his/her environment, and can create effects on his/her life that others can appreciate. The power of one is exponentially increased through creating good effects on all the other life forces." Rima goes on to say, "I have embraced and studied the philosophies which allow for spiritual growth and freedom; an awareness of self, being at cause over one's own life. While interacting with the life forces of spouse/family, groups, mankind, the physical universe, animals and plants, spirits, and of course, the Supreme Being, one can make choices that improve one's life and thus the lives of others." |

Lula,, John
bpjohnsebastian@yahoo.com
Classmate John Lula is now known as Most Reverend Bishop Lula or Abbot John A. Lula, OSB. By profession, he is a Bishop in the Ukrainian Orthodox Catholic Church (Western Rite). Bishop Lula has lived in East Chicago, IN, Chicago, IL, Fargo & Grand Forks, ND, San Francisco, Oakland and Banning, CA, and Las Cruces, New Mexico. John is now relocated to Toledo, Ohio, where he is the Abbot of a small residence/Oblate House. He still retains Benedictine monasteries in New Mexico, Indiana and Illinois, and does traveling to them all. Foreign travels have included Vatican City and Prague.
After his BNI days, John attended Cardinal Meunch Seminary in Fargo, ND, for college. While in residence at the Seminary and in the summers, The Bishop’s Residence, John attended North Dakota State University in Fargo. After college, he attended Sacred Heart School of Theology in Hales Corners, WI, and then transferred to St. John Crysostumom Theological Seminary in San Francisco, CA. Sacred Heart School of Theology was Roman Catholic and St. John’s in San Francisco was Western Rite Orthodox.
John was ordained an Orthodox Benedictine Priest on August 8, 1982, in Anaheim, CA, and was consecrated Bishop and Abbot on February 22, 2002, in Union Mills, IN. Besides earning his Master of Divinity degree, John also was a member of the U.S. Air Force from 1969-1972, serving with the Military Police K-9 in North Dakota, Korea, and Okinawa, Japan.
On a different note, John’s hobbies/interests include his dog and two cats, jazz and classical music and, of course, Oldies But Goodies, and a good cigar – then, says John, I am in heaven! Also, John can claim to be a celebrity – on occasion he has been an “extra” in the movie business, appearing in “Never Been Kissed Before” with Drew Barrymore, and also “Stir of Echoes” with Kevin Bacon, to name a couple. Yet, John states, “I do not do it anymore though – no time.”
John hopes some day to have the opportunity to return for a visit and join up with old classmates. He teases, “By the pictures I had seen, there have been a lot of facial changes and body changes. We got old!!!”
More information on Benedictine monks is available at www.aorcc.us. Bishop Lula’s website may be viewed at http://hometown.aol.com/AbbotJohnLula/index.html. |

Yes, after living in Ohio and Nebraska, Maralyn now lives in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. She has 2 daughters and 1 granddaughter. An Artist-Actor/Director/Writer with Kay Bridge Productions, she belongs to the Professional Actors Association. In closing, Maralyn sends everyone a warm, embracing Hello. She says, "I'm so proud to call Bishop Noll my alma mater so to speak, and have wonderful memories of all the great teachers and friends. Moose Thomas,, Elizabeth (Betty)

Betty says, "I designed and built my own home." That was her place in Evergreen, CO. Recently, in 2006, Betty, now retired from Coors Brewery, has moved with her 2 cats, 2 dogs, 2 horses and various barn cats, to Florissant, CO. She has six acres near the Pike National Forest boundary. Her latest project will be remodeling as she purchased an older home, with a barn and several log outbuildings, one of them being an original homestead cabin from 1912. Betty claims that her small town just recently received some notoriety when the Mayor of Florissant was featured on the Martha Stewart Show. Martha was fascinated by the fact that the city's mayor, Paco Bell, is a donkey!
Attending Purdue University, Community College of Denver, Loretto Heights College and the University of Phoenix, Betty earned Associate degrees in Business Management, Marketing and Real Estate, a Bachelor's degree in Construction and Real Estate Management, and a Master's degree in Organizational Management. For many years, she was Maintenance Process Manager for Coors Brewing Company. Her favorite teen memories include summer vacations with trips to the Indiana Dunes and the U.S. 30 Drag Strip. Betty says her Bishop Noll experience gave her values and a good education. The meeting of a celebrity that stands in Betty's mind was the small luncheon she was able to attend for Monty Roberts in the late 1990's. He is a horse whisperer and has written several books. Betty says that he is a true humanitarian and believes in treating people and animals with kindness and respect. Also, in the mid-1990's, Betty met James Whitmore folloiwng one of his performances of "Will Rogers USA." Finally, Betty became part of a taped segment of "60 Minutes" as Mike Wallace was taping a story on the strike and boycott of Coors Brewery. It seems that Coors Brewery workers went on strike back in 1977, and in the '80's, several organizations were still boycotting Coors. The TV crew was on site for days, Bill and Pete Coors were interviewed, and then several employees and groups involved in the boycott were interviewed to report both sides of the story. Well, when Betty stood in line, got to the microphone and, holding her hard hat under her arm, said something to the effect that, "Coors in not anti-Black, anti-Hispanic, anti-women or anything else; Coors was simply pro-People," she got some applause and her statement actually made it on the TV segment. If anyone has a tape from September 26, 1982, yes, it's OUR Betty! |

Although sorry that she will miss the upcoming reunion and the chance to get reacquainted, Lee Ann is grateful that we found her, though, she admits, she didn't know she was lost! Lee Ann goes on to say, "Having been in Florida since 1970, Hoosier-land seems long ago! I did keep up my dancing for a while (for those of you who remember Muffett School of Dance in Hessville), but eventually got into teaching, first elementary and then middle school. I transitioned into school administration for a short while, but for the past 5 years have been a district level administrator, namely the curriculum coordinator for Beacon Educator, a professional development organization through our school district. After Noll, Bill went first to St. Procopius College, then switched to Notre Dame when he changed majors from math to history. He then pursued a PhD in Irish history at the University of Chicago. His dissertation took much longer than he expected because he chose a topic that would have been better suited for a mid-career book, the myth that grew up about an Irish politician after he died young. (Remember reading James Joyce’s A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man in Mr. Zabrecki’s class when we were juniors? The politician was Parnell, the subject of the family quarrel over Christmas dinner).
The long time in graduate school turned out to be a blessing in disguise, because Bill got a job in the university’s public affairs office, and wound up with a career. His first full-time job was with the American Public Works Association, then he returned to the University of Chicago, where he worked in periodicals and publications and finally media relations. He moved to the University of Illinois in 1995, Ohio State in 2003, and the University of Rochester in 2006.
Bill met Lamar at the University of Chicago, where she was finishing a PhD in U.S. history, and they married in 1985. Lamar has had a career as a consultant and university administrator. She is currently deputy to the president at Rochester.
Bill doesn’t teach Irish history, but family history has become a hobby, and he found the Murphy family farm, and some more Murphys, in County Kerry, not far from Killarney. The house in which his great-grandfather was born is still standing, and Bill led a family trip there in 2000 that included Brenda (BNI ’68) and Rich (BNI ’74). |

As vice president of our BNI Class of 1965, Chuck took an early interest in politics and public life. Guess most classmates would not be surprised to learn that, after living in New York City, Paris and San Francisco, Chuck now makes Washington, DC his home. Always the social person, we're sure Chuck has many entertaining stories to relate about life in the nation's capital. Chuck earned his B.A. and J.D. from Notre Dame, and followed with a stint with the Military Police. While living in France, Chuck did most of his legal work in London, Cairo and Moscow. Currently, he puts his law degree to work as a Lobbyist for Johnson & Johnson. Strangely enough, Chuck’s first day of work there was 9-11-01.
Asked what he enjoys as a hobby, Chuck tells us, “Les chose du publicitaire!” Collecting items that the French use to publicize or advertise their products, such as posters, wine labels, cigars, French line shipping, fans, match strikers, bistro ware, kiosks, etc., has been an interesting pastime for Chuck, who now has an accumulation of perhaps a thousand items. Might Chuck’s response in "French" and his love of France certify Chuck’s choice of his favorite teacher - - none other than Ma Soeur, Sr. Miriam Edward, his first BNI “French connection!”
Chuck still keeps in touch with old BNI friends - - Mary Alice Herod, Tina Bialek, Elaine Engle and Bill Murphy. When not occupied with his busy career and with collecting, at home Chuck enjoys his two schipperkes, Sky and Romy. Schipperkes, you ask? The name is Flemish for “little captain,” and they are barge dogs used mostly in the canals of the Netherlands and France. Guess if Shirley Temple could leave the Good Ship Lollipop to live in Washington, DC, there’s no reason to believe that a couple of schipperkes couldn’t jump ship!

While the rest of us have watched NASA launches with curiosity and wonder, Dan has been actively involved as an engineer for Boeing (formerly McDonnell Douglas). Receiving his BSEE from Purdue University and his MSEE from the University of California - Irvine, Dan was appointed a Corporate Technical Fellow by McDonnell Douglas and now Boeing. He had a primary role in a reusable rocket test program that made the evening TV news programs and magazines in the early 90's. He was interviewed for a few national publications. In his line of work, Dan had occasion to have contact with a few celebrities. He was a co-worker and friend of Pete Conrad, the 3rd astronaut to walk on the moon. Dan met with Dan Goldin (then NASA administrator) several times and had dinner with him in DC. And, Dan briefed a Congressional staffer in the Dirksen/Senate building prior to a NASA funding bill markup. It would come as no surprise that Dan's interests include studying modern physics/cosmology and philosophy, but would you believe he also enjoys arranging music for piano and keyboard and can play piano and keyboard very well. Dan had many favorite high school memories as he says, "It was the best time of my life. I knew it then. There were many great memories - captain of the wrestling team, president of the Monogram Club, Prom co-chair. Learning self-discipline via class studies, sports, activities. Acting in "The Mouse that Roared" and learning that acting intensity can be equal to athletic intensity." Dan says that the best thing his BNI experience gave him was examples of self sacrificing teachers (nuns, priest, lay). They could have made more $ doing other things, but they believed in catholic education." In short, Dan's philosophy on life, "Faith without works is empty. God wants action - but gives a lotta points for effort." |

Noworyta Rak,, Cynthia
giantoaks@verizon.net
Our California friends, Cynthia and husband John Rak (Class of 1964), have 2 daughters and 2 stepdaughters, and let's not forget - 2 cats! A 4th grade Teacher Aide at St. Paschal Baylon School, Cindy says that working with the children keeps her busy and happy. And, it helped her earn an award she is quite proud of - the Best Sugar Cookie Maker at the school where she works!
Listing her least favorite experience is one that many of us Nollites can relate to - a lot of homework! Cindy says she spent a lot of time on homework, but, was grateful that it led to good grades, a diploma, and a good education. Favorite memories include sock hops after basketball games, meeting her husband, homecoming and turnabout dances and prom. Maybe all those dances gave Cindy the courage in 1985 to wear a "Care Bear" costume with her younger daughter and her friend and mother to sing and dance at their Parish Festival variety show!
In closing, Cindy and John are returning to The Region to join us in July, and, as Cindy says, "I can't believe it's been 40 years!" |

Schweitzer,, William
bill@paccielo.com
Besides facing the challenges of high tech at Hewlett-Packard, albeit from the comfort of his spacious home, Bill has started a new venture. He’s become our very own California wineman, helping to start a new wine-producing region in So-Cal. Bill and Kathleen make their home in Ramona, CA, in San Diego County. In addition to grapes, the Schweitzers grow olives. There’s no chance of them becoming earth-bound though. Bill is also a member of both the Experimental Aircraft Association and the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association. This fits in with Bill’s philosophy of "Life is change. Growth is optional. Choose wisely." Bill choose Notre Dame and then went to USC, collecting a B.S. in Math and an M.S. in Computer Science along the way. He’s also collected travel memories in Europe, Africa, French Polynesia, and Japan. Through all the changes, he has stayed in touch with old friend Bill Murphy. The Schweitzers have two sons and three grandchildren with whom to share their memories. |

Schwerin,, Lewis
lschweri@us.ibm.com
Making his home in the Rockies, in Grand Lake, CO, is Lewie Schwerin. Is it any wonder that Lew's favorite hobbies/interests are walking, hiking, bicycling, motor cycling, skiing, and snow shoeing. He somehow manages to ignore the breathtaking views long enough to maintain his job as project manager for IBM. Lew earned a BS in Computer and Management Science, and an AA in Data Processing, having attended Metro State College in Denver. Lewie also served in the U.S. Air Force for about 12 years. He has lived in Turkey, Greece, Cyprus, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, and Australia, and has visited several other countries in Central America and Europe.
In short, Lewie's philosophy on life includes the following thoughts, feelings and sentiments, "Spiritual, not religious, Be Bold and the mighty will come to your aid, Do unto others as you would have them do unto you." Lew now considers himself an Animal Rights Vegetarian Environmental Extremist. All that, plus, we remember him as one fun-loving guy and hope he'll hop that Reunion Train back to The Region in July. |

Living in Miami, FL, Marianne and husband Walter, have one son and two daughters and a granddaughter. Ooops, and let's not forget three bichon frieses and one cat! With nursing degrees from Purdue University, Marianne went on to complete her Master of Public Health, Environmental and Occupational Health Nursing, listing other universities attended as Metropolitan State University, St. Paul, MN, University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, MN, and Nova Southeastern University, Miami, FL. She lists Sr. Scholastica as one of her role models. "As a teen girl, growing up in 1950 thru 1979, I was in awe of a female scientist! She gave me the courage to push forward in my educational pursuits and to question why things were they way they were." Which, for favorite subjects, leads Marianne to reply, "I honestly loved all my classes! I could be a professional student. I enjoyed learning - I still do. It is the fertilizer for my growth in life."
Marianne works as a Registered Nurse at the Jackson South Community Hospital in Miami, FL, and in her spare time, she enjoys gardening, crocheting, glass painting, reading, travel, and taking care of her "babies" - i.e., her dogs, cat, and assorted ducks (3-4 doz.) who visit twice a day for a meal!
Marianne's philosophy of life, "Live life with no regrets. You only pass this way once, so make the most of it. Believe in yourself and your dreams, follow that wherever it may take you. Good or bad, things will happen for a reason. If you look back at those difficult times in your life you will see the impact that your decisions have made in the here and now. What may have been a poor choice at the time has become a door of opportunity now. Have faith and courage in yourself - just open that door!"
Marianne goes on to state that, "in high school I think I was pretty quiet and shy. I found out that I AM NOT!" She remembers with fondness her BNI classmates and particularly the kids from "I.C." going to the usual spot after school - the Wishing Well Restaurant. While drinking cherry cokes and eating french fries, the girls would flirt with the boys and vice-versa, she recalls. Marianne goes on to say that, "I remember lining up for the processional at our graduation, thinking that it would never be like this again. What a bittersweet memory."
In closing, Marianne states, "We were told that High School was only the beginning of our lives - how little we knew then. Forty plus years later, the faces are blurred, names forgotten, some of the memories have faded, but the warmth, the emotions, the love we all shared burns deep in my mind and heart. It is a treasure that I take everywhere with me."

You can find them now happily humming, "Back Home Again in Indiana," as they have sold their home and are joyfully unpacking at a house on the lake in Warsaw, IN. Thus, the word "fish" in their new e-address - - yes, retirement sounds great! Besides fishing, Thelma plans to have time to devote to reading, needlework and additional traveling. She has already been to Australia, New Zealand, England, Holland, Austria, Germany, Italy, Monaco, France, Canada, Mexico, Dominican Republic, Grenada, St. Lucia, Martinique, Bahamas and Barbados. Thelma credits her BNI experience for providing her with a great education, great friends and great memories. Bob and wife Brenda, and their two dogs - a scotty and a westie, live in Metairie, near New Orleans. Bob has also lived in Michigan, Florida, and Ohio. Some celebrities that Bob has had contact with are Bob Hope, Pete Rose, Phil Donahue, John Stamos, John Coleman, and Harry Volkman.
Bob attended Purdue University Calumet and the University of Michigan, receiving a B.S. in Meteorology/Oceanography. He has contributed time to both the U.S Marine Corps Reserve and U.S. Air Force Reserves. In recalling his BNI years, Bob, of course, remembers time spent with his late wife and also our '65 classmate, Paula Dybel, but also recounts the story when he hurt his foot at school and he remembers being carried bleeding to the nurse’s office by John Halcarz.
In short, Bob's philosophy on life, "Do not live for the future as tomorrow may never come. Live for today as the future is now." Bob also shares these closing thoughts with us, "I, like many of you, wasted my high school years. I didn't get involved with all the extra curricular activities that help develop life long friendships...Fortunately, college brought out my personality and gave me confidence in myself. Losing my first wife, Paula, made me realize how precious this life really is. Luckily, I've been blessed with another woman to share my life. The girl we all knew as Joanne Zagar, now Cookie Stevens, lives in Gaithersburg, MD, with singing parrot Rico, who also joined us at the 2003 reunion. She recalls her favorite Noll memories as cheering for our team, TP'ing houses, going to the pizza place after games, and hiding from Mrs. Beall. Cookie says her BNI experience gave her a great starter education that allowed for discipline and fortitude needed for projects that followed.
Cookie worked for 29 years with Amoco Oil Credit Card Center. She now works for Remax 2000 as a Real Estate Consultant, licensed to work in several states. She has seen a lot of real estate, having lived in Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, Florida, North Carolina, Virginia, and Maryland. She loves to travel and has been all over Europe, Canada, Egypt, Israel, Turkey, Mexico and the Caribbean. She also loves to dance, roller blade, and visit with friends. Cookie has a spare room ready for anyone wanting to visit our nation’s capital!

Zubeck,, Gregory
jobsguy@cableaz.com
Greg uses his BNI education on a daily basis. He’s a Technical Recruiter (Headhunter) for Resource Spectrum, and credits Noll with giving him the background he needs to transform inscrutable resumes into appealing ones.
Since graduation, Greg studied in such varied places as the Marine Corps Engineering School, Programming and Systems Institute, Indiana University Northwest, and Ivy Tech. He has also lived in several states and Japan. One constancy in his life has been wife Darlene Kaminski(BNI ’66)Zubeck. They live in Mesa, AZ. The Zubecks have a son, a daughter, and two granddaughters.
During his Noll years, Greg was on the Track team, a member of the Spanish Club, and he did some photography for the JourNOLL magazine. As far as awards or honors from BNI, Greg recalls being awarded "Shirt of the Month" several times by Bob Bradtke. Musing on his favorite high school memory, Greg says, "Those were the "hormone years." BNI had some of the "hottest looking" girls from "Da Region." I know. I married one. (And she's still stuck with me)!" Celebrities that Greg has had contact with include Duncan Renaldo (The Cisco Kid, from the Sunday morning westerns), Marty Allen (Comic of the team of Martin & Rossi), and Leslie Nielson (Actor in Airplace, Police Squad, and the Naked Gun movie series).
Calling himself a recent re-vert to Roman Catholicism, Greg says that the thing that would surprise classmates the most is that for a couple of years, Greg was the Assistant Pastor of a Pentecostal Church of over 350 members; and another time, the Supervisor of Education of a K-12 Christian school in Chicago.
Greg summarizes his philosophy of life with the statement, "Life is not made up of the breaths you take, but of those moments that take your breath away." We hope the Zubecks will be joining us for a breathtaking experience in July. |
